My Teaching Philosophy

ON TEACHING MUSIC (Μy Philosophy)

Constantin Nikolakis Mouchas

My music journey started under my mother’s grand piano. I was fascinated and mesmerized by the glorious sounds while she was practicing or teaching! My curiosity after each piano lesson led me to try by ear various pieces on my tiny two octave little toy piano in my room. I was just about four years old. Twenty years later, with a BMus (Honors) in piano performance, I find myself trying to pass my knowledge and love of music to my students. I believe that teachers become great through care, planning, hard work, skill, imagination and through the continuing desire for personal improvement. My aim is to empower and motivate my students by planning engaging lessons that keep my students interested in music, eager to learn and building up their confidence. My mission is to convey enthusiasm for music, instill sound technical habits, develop reading and listening skills as well as memory and improvising skills, and build up good practice habits. I like exploring a variety of musical styles, including duets and if possible other ensemble playing. I organize student concerts at least once a year and my students are encouraged to participate in local music festivals. Each student is different; therefore, my approach varies according to their character and abilities. Exams are optional and require a joint decision between the student, the parents, and the teacher. Students need to feel that they are in a safe and friendly environment when they enter my studio. I always welcome them with a smile, building up a good relationship based on trust and mutual respect. I aim to be inclusive, welcoming students of any background, age, and ability. My studio is safe, spacious, and well equipped. I have a DBS certificate. A contract, including all my terms and conditions is provided and needs to be signed by the student/parent. Termly reports are sent to all students aiming to positively motivate the student and encourage improvement.
